Pupuseria Salvadorena

Monday night I had the pleasure of venturing out to Pupuseria Salvadorena, a little Salvadoran venue over on 225 N. Rutherford Blvd., in Murfreesboro, TN. Let me preach on it.

This is going to be another mini-review. I’ll be doing another in depth one this weekend on a venue to be named soon. Stay tuned.

First off, let me say I’m no world traveler, and there are lots of cultural cuisine I have never tried, and Salvadoran fare is one of them. I’ve heard lots of good things about this place in its short time open, so The Missus and I met a good friend who is very knowledgeable about food and tried it out.

I found the place easy enough, but was momentarily confused by the lack of sign on the building. The windows are brightly painted however and that was our que we were in the right place. Lots of bright colors, with groovy looking murals. Only a couple of patrons were present, and we were readily greeted.

The menu was a little overwhelming to me due to a lot of spanish terms. Our server and my dinner companions helped me thru deciphering my choices, having a little fun with me doing so. Eventually I settled on 3 pupusas…One with pork, one with beans, and one with jalapenos. The meal came with a giant bowl of slaw that was seasoned and had anchovies mixed in it. I have not eaten an anchovie in decades. However, they were not overpowering and mixed into the profile well. I really didn’t notice them hardly. A couple of bottles of sauce were brought out, one red and one green. The green one was the hot one, but not overly so. I sauced my pupusa and topped it with slaw and dug in.

It was delicious. The mix of flavors and texture were very enjoyable. It didn’t look like a lot of food, but it was very filling.

I had a blackberry water to drink which I settled on after they let me try a few samples of various ones including horchata.

A final note on this one, is the place was clean. Again, one of my pet peeves. Good to see since this is an older building as well.

So there we go. I can’t offer a lot of insight into this, since it was my first experience with Salvadoran food. What I will say is that I loved it and plan on going back. Two of us ate for $21.00 which is nice on the pocket book.

My best friends live in Germany, and eeeevery so often I receive a little taste of Deutsche goodness. This time it was cookies in a wonderful tin and one of the most delightful chocolate snacks I have ever had. I only had a couple of nibbles of each cookie, but they are incredible. I’m. It sure what the hippo has to do with chocolate in Germany but I’m not going to question it too closely. Thank You Mr. & Mrs. hand and family.
